1. The origin of occupational health and safety management system

The occupational health and safety system emerged in the late 1980s, when some multinational companies and large modern conglomerates established a self-disciplined management system in order to strengthen their social attention and control losses. Whether it's failing to protect workers from toxic chemicals or getting sleep-deprived employees involved in fatal car crashes, millions of people are injured or killed on the job every year. With the advent of the world's first international standard for occupational safety and health, many of these incidents will be avoided.
ISO 45001 is the world's first international standard for occupational health and safety. It provides government agencies, industry and other stakeholders with effective and usable guidance to improve worker safety in countries around the world. It is delivered through an easy-to-use framework for captive companies, partners and production facilities wherever they are located.

2. Why convert OHSAS18001 into ISO standard? In general, there are four reasons:

● Universal;
● More authoritative;
● Easier to integrate;
● Easier to manage.

3. The ISO 45001 standard has a flexible implementation in the management of occupational health and safety, and is applicable to a range of organizations, including:

● Large organizations and corporations
● Small and medium-sized companies
● Public and non-profit organizations
● NGOs and charities

4. The main difference between ISO45001 and OHSAS18001

ISO45001 and OHSAS18001 are the same in management objectives, but differ in the following aspects:

● Uses the high-level structure of the ISO management system
● Greater focus on "organizational context"
● Emphasis on top management responsibilities and leadership
● Greater focus on management responsibilities
● Emphasis on the basis of Risk thinking
● Greater focus on performance monitoring and measurement

5. Timeline of ISO45001 version change:

For the conversion of ISO45001 standard, IAF passed Resolution 2016-15, which originally stipulated that the conversion period of ISO45001 will be transitioned to three years after the release of ISO45001 standard, that is, the conversion work should be completed before March 12, 2021. (Due to the impact of the epidemic in 2020, the International Accreditation Forum (IAF) issued an important announcement on the extension of the ISO 45001 transition period, to buy more time for many certified companies that have not completed the transition from OHSAS 18001 to ISO 45001. Existing The OHSAS 18001 certificate can now be extended for 6 months. This means that the period for converting from OHSAS 18001:2007 to ISO 45001:2018 will be extended until September 11, 2021.)

6. How to change the version smoothly

If there are relevant personnel in the enterprise who have the corresponding time and ability to conduct training and digestion of the new standard on their own, they can directly contact the audit company for the transition. If the enterprise does not have professional personnel and sufficient time to prepare temporarily, it is recommended to find a professional consulting company to provide technical support, which can achieve twice the result with half the effort.

Since the publication of the first draft of ISO45001, our company has been paying attention to the development and changes of the standard, and is now assisting some enterprises in the transition of the new standard.
